Today’s success tip comes from Lisa McInnes-Smith.

At 26 years of age, Lisa set her biggest goal: positively affect one million Australian teenagers, a goal that was to change her life. In the 8½ years it has taken to achieve her goal, Lisa has travelled the country speaking in schools and youth groups.

Even though the majority of people know how important it is to have goals, why do you think so many fail to set them?

Most people know the theory behind goal setting but their fear is often times greater than the excitement of the goal. So many people’s lives are run by fear - fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of letting people down, fear of success, and fear of the unknown. Others thrive on faith, the possibility of success, of overcoming, of succeeding, of making a difference, of making a whole new pathway for themselves, believing in what hasn’t yet come to pass. It takes faith to set goals and it takes faith to fight off the fear in all of our lives.

Fear is a formidable foe; it’s entangled in our thinking, our beliefs and our thoughts about the future. Fear is what most people think they must conquer before they go after their goals. Funnily enough, in many ways goal setting is a pathway to defeating fear. Every step toward the goal pushes people’s fear further away. Competence builds confidence and confidence leads to action. Action achieves goals.

So why is it that so many people fail to set goals?

1. They don’t take time to write them down.

2. They don’t make time to read them.

3. They don’t make a plan to reach each goal.

4. They don’t write down benefits of achieving each goal.

Not one of these steps are hard to do so, but it just takes a decision to get started and a commitment to follow through.

I hope you have learned from this week’s advice. Be sure to check back again next time for more great tips from the experts.

Until then,

Take The First Step!
Monday, July 6th, 2009

Hi Friends

“So what is the first step towards achieving your goals and what you want in life?”, you may ask.

Many people talk about making changes in their lives and yet often nothing seems to change. Why is this?

Often you may hear people talking about the fact that they are not satisfied with their lives and the way that things are currently going. Why then does nothing change – even when they want things to be better and different?

Today’s quote, I believe contains part of the answer. In order to make changes in your lives, you first need to actually find out what it is that you want. You need to really take the time to sit down and decide what it is that you want to change.

QUOTE OF

THE DAY:

” The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.”

- Ben Stein

I encourage you today to set aside some time and actually come to decision of what it is that you want changed. This is the first step to a better future for you and those you care about.

Until next time, Remember to Enjoy Life, Smile at a stranger and Make a Difference in the World!

Advice on Goal-Setting from Andrew May
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Today’s success tip comes from Andrew May.

After he founded Good Health Solutions, which is now Australia’s largest corporate health and wellbeing consultancy, Andrew continued to work with professional athletes and is now considered one of Australia’s leading experts on performance.

What are your seven steps for successful goal-setting?

1. Ask yourself the right questions - what do you want and why do you want to achieve it? How much does it really mean to you? What are the benefits of achieving the goal? Who will be affected? Are you prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve the goal?

2. Involve significant others - don’t keep your goals to yourself. Enlist the support of your partner, family, friends and colleagues. This keeps you accountable, while at the same time forming a support group to keep you on track.

3. Get anchored - write your goals down on a sheet of paper, simplify them into point form and then display them somewhere you can view them regularly - your diary, office, car, even on the back of the toilet door.

4. Small bites - George Miller, a 1950s psychologist, believed that we can only deal with seven bits of information at any one time. Any more than this and we need to group things into more memorable, manageable chunks. So when you create your master plan for the New Year, keep goals to a manageable number and group similar areas.

5. Set a plan - after you have written down your specific goals, the next step is to work out a specific plan. Identify the key steps you need to take toward accomplishing your goals and assign specific dates for their achievement.

6. Project the future - review your goals at least every seven days (every day is ideal) - and don’t leave it for another year. This helps activate the Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS is an inbuilt goal-setting device that tracks us toward our target and filters the type of information we let into our internal system. Spend time thinking about what it will be like once you have successfully achieved your goals. How are you going to feel? We really do become what we think!

7. Be realistic and reward yourself along the way - it is important to reward yourself along the way as you tick off your achievements. Give yourself a pat on the back for sticking to the process.

And remember, humans make mistakes, so don’t beat yourself up if you lose focus. If you find yourself breaking resolutions or experiencing distractions, sit down and go through the goal-setting process again, starting from step one.
