How do you handle questions from an audience you don’t know the answer to?

Whether I know the answer or not to an audience question, I always acknowledge the person who asked the question and thank them. Then depending on the question I may do one or a combination of these three things:

1. I will simply admit that I don’t know. I think it is important to be open and honest and by admitting you don’t know, you are able to avoid looking silly if you are wrong. In fact, this honest approach may allow you to be more endearing and trustworthy to the audience.

2. I will refer the question to the audience as someone usually has some suggestions. This approach has the added benefit of creating audience engagement. It gives them the opportunity to think rather than just sit and listen, while also offering someone the chance to shine in front of their peers.

3. If appropriate, I will offer to find out and get back to them.

If you don’t know the answer to a question asked, be sure to find out the answer before your next engagement in an effort to improve and add value to your presentation.

That’s all for now. I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s success tip, and be sure to check back again soon for more advice from the experts.

Until then,

This week’s success tip comes from Cydney O’Sullivan.

With the experience Cydney gained from buying and selling more than 12 properties, she jumped in at the start of the greatest ‘bull run’ in Australian stock market history. She now holds multi-million dollar property, business and stock portfolios and earns millions of dollars through her share trading and investing businesses.

What are the most important things you have learnt about being a mother, wife and businesswoman?

As a mother, wife and businesswoman I’ve learnt:

* Relationships thrive when you nurture them and wither when you neglect them.

* Being a mother and a businesswoman is a constant priority juggle for me. When I was married I always put my husband’s career first, then when I had the children my needs moved even further down the list, but then I discovered that you can and should make your needs a priority too.

* To live how you believe you should not just talk about it. Children need role models to show them how to best fit into society and setting a good example is more powerful than anything you say.

* There are some good things about being a single mother. It is easier because there’s only one set of rules in the house and I have the control over what sort of parent I want to be. I also had a lot more time for myself since the children’s father took them on the weekends.

What tips do you have for other working mothers to achieve balance?

* Outsource as many of the jobs you don’t like as you can - get a cleaner, a gardener, a dishwasher.

* Where possible, plan your days and weeks ahead of time, but be flexible.

* Try and include your children as much as possible so that they can learn from the experience and respect the time you require for work (ask your family and friends to help, but make sure you return the favour).

* Use your time wisely. I used to read books to my kids in the afternoon and evenings when we were all tired. We loved being in the big bed all together enjoying stories and now my children are great readers.

* Make time for yourself, as it makes you happier and everyone benefits.

That’s all for this week. I hope this success tip has been helpful for you in some way. Check back again next time for more exciting tips and advice from the experts.

Until then,

Business Advice With Glen Kiddell
September 29th, 2009

Glen Kiddel is the Co-founder of VitaMan Skincare, a men’s grooming company, now operating in one of the fastest growing industries out there.

Most business partnerships rarely last longer than a few years. Why do you think your partnership with Clare has been so successful and what advice would you give to others?

My partnership with Clare was like destiny, we have an amazing connection where there is an unspoken link between us. Each of us would do whatever it takes to support the other through our business journey together. The amount of mutual trust and respect we have for each other is incredible, as is our growing admiration for each other. Maybe there is a spiritual connection. I have met thousands of great people over the last 30 years and I cannot think of anyone whom I would rather have as a business partner. The huge appreciation we have for each other just continues to evolve as we share the same dream - we do it as much for each other as we do for ourselves.

I think another contributing factor in our success is that we each brought a different set of skills and experiences to the partnership. My background was in health, fitness and natural medicine, while Clare was involved with make-up and beauty therapy training. Clare had a much stronger background in fundamental business operations while I was able to offer stronger sales and creative skills.

Finding someone as special as Clare was a gift. It’s hard to advise someone how to find the right business partner, you might just meet someone one day and find that there is an instant connection between you, as happened with us, or you might meet someone within your circle of friends. I truly believe that the right partner will come along at the right time and choose you.

Deciding to work together is a massive undertaking. Spending more than eight hours a day together, year after year, in the same room is more time than most married couples spend together! I know that our partnership has worked so well because we have supported each other on a personal level, which is crucial to maintaining stability in the business.
Knowing that your partner will cover for you when you have a family crisis or need time out, and that you will reciprocate when it’s their turn, makes the partnership stronger. [[Clare went above and beyond the normal call of duty when I lost my father to cancer]], and again when my mum had a sudden stroke. This support was huge, and I cannot express my gratitude strongly enough for what Clare did for me during those difficult times.

My advice when deciding upon a business partner is to discuss how you will deal with unexpected events and how you will support each other. You should also agree that disagreeing will be a part of growing and not let it interfere with your relationship. You must also feel completely comfortable spending long hours with that person.

At the end of the day, go with your ‘gut intuition’ when deciding whom you want to partner with, and make sure that you both understand that you will both have to do the hard work. If one begins to slack off, it can create animosity and a feeling of it not being a true partnership anymore. It’s crucial that you are able to talk through concerns and offer each other constructive criticism in the best interests of your business.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s success tip. Check back again next time for more great advice from the experts.

Put your best foot forward every time! One of the reasons that many people fear taking the podium is because they are afraid of being the focal point of everyone’s attention and they don’t want to make a fool of themselves. There are several things you can do to “fool-proof” your speaking event so that you present well every single time!

1. Take the time to prepare well for your presentation. Preparation enhances your confidence and it’s also an opportunity to refine any weak areas in your presentation.

2. Begin and end your presentation on time. Arriving late to your presentation is simply unprofessional; not to mention that it won’t win you any points with your crowd. Also speaking over time shows your audience that you don’t value their time.

3. Know your audience. The only way you can really relate your audience is if you know who they are. Profile your audience. Are they male or female? What income bracket are they in? Why would they attend your presentation?

4. Dress appropriately for your audience. Not all speaking engagements require a business suit! There are many places where business casual attire has become the norm. Before your audience even hears your message, they are already sizing you up and this is impacting whether or not they are hearing what you have to say!

5. Have a backup plan for visual aids used in your presentation. You’ve selected to use visual aids because you thought they would be helpful in getting your message across. What happens when laptops fail or the room cannot accommodate presentation equipment? Create a plan on how you would handle a situation like that.

6. Tone down information overload. Yes, you can overload your audience with too much information and if you’re not careful, you’ll lose them. They’ll mentally check out. As a speaker, you’ll want to present enough information that hooks them into getting more information from you!

7. Don’t use inappropriate humor. Humor can be a tricky thing working for you or against you. You will really have to know your audience in order to use jokes or humor appropriately.

8. Vary your speech tones. The monotonous speaker will lose their audience within the first 15 minutes. It’s okay to be animated during your presentation and in fact, doing so will transmit flair and passion that keeps people engaged in your message.

9. Relate your topic back to your audience. Basically, stop talking about yourself! Your audience might want to hear a testimony or two, but mostly, they’ll want to hear about them and how your presentation can help them!

10. Solidify your message. Support your ideas with data and evidence and build a solid case for your viewpoints. You can use statistics, testimonies, demonstrations, pictures and more!

Your presentation can be fool proof if you take the time to minimize mistakes. By going through these key points, you can assure yourself that you are well prepared for any challenge that might come your way and you will experience the success you’ve always dreamed of!

Have you heard of the fantastic software tool named Market Samurai?

I discovered Market Samurai about six months ago and have found what it can do has saved me hours of manual researching. Market Samurai is set up with different modules within the program.

Earlier on I was using Market Samurai mainly for keyword research. It allows you to create a new project and then research different keywords that are connected with that project.

Once you type in your keyword you then click on “Generate Keywords”. Market Samurai-Generate KeywordsMarket Samurai then generates dozens of related keywords in a short time. At this point you are able to add additional keywords to this list that you can think of and you can also filter out keywords that you do not want to be included in the next step of analyzing these keywords.

Market Samurai makes it so easy to find the keywords and then allows you to click on “Analyze Keywords”. At this point each of the keywords are analyzed to see different factors related to each of these keywords. These include the number of searches and the trends over the last year for each keyword.

Several filters can then be applied to this list of keywords and then the analysis can be refined. Filters such as SEO Traffic (SEOT), Phrase-To-Broad (PBR), SEO Competition (SEOC) and Commerciality (OCI) are used to refine your analysis so that you can find the best keywords to use in your project.
This list of filters is just the start of what is available. There are more filters such as Adwords Cost Per Click (CPC) and SEO Value (SEOV), which can also be used to refine your search. You have total control over which filters you use and what you set each one to.

Another great feature of Market Samurai is that it can operate on both the Macintosh operating system and Windows on PCs. This means that almost anyone with a computer can take advantage of this great resource to save time and make your task a lot easier.

This is only the start of how you can use Market Samurai to save you time and effort. Next time we will look at the SEOC (SEO Competition) analysis and matrix and how you can interpret the results for your particular project.

Until next time, Remember to Enjoy Life, Smile at a stranger and Make a Difference in the World!

Build Your Self Esteem
August 18th, 2009

Self-esteem is defined as the way a person feels and thinks about him or herself. It is believed that self-esteem is developed during the childhood years. It is largely affected by how one has been treated by the people surrounding him or her particularly his or her parents.

Many individuals suffer from low-esteem. When someone has low self-esteem it affects all facets of his or her life. Low self-esteem can have adverse effects in ones confidence, ability to build and maintain friendships and romantic relationships, career development or work performance. It could also lead to unhappiness and a generally unsatisfactory life. When one has doubts about his or her capacities then he or she is likely to be suffering from low self-esteem.

It’s rather hard to estimate just how many people suffer from self esteem issues, but it is estimated that millions of people around the world are suffering from low self-esteem. It affects people of all types, including those in developed and industrialized countries such as the United States and United Kingdom.

Fortunately for these individuals, there are many ways to build self-esteem. One of the most effective of these ways is to have a positive self image. A positive self image simply means an agreeable or favorable view of ones self including ones talents and abilities and physical attributes. In other words, to have a healthy self-esteem one must be able to like or love him or herself. If you do not like yourself you simply cannot have high self esteem.

Another way to avoid having low self esteem is to get rid of negative thoughts. You might be wondering how exactly do you go about doing this? The most important thing is to be able to recognize a negative thought as it enters your mind. One cannot simply will a negative thought away. The most effective way to dispel negative thoughts is to replace them with positive ones. If, for example, you are beginning to have doubts. Then simply replace these doubtful thoughts with thoughts of confidence and belief.

It is important that you change the negative thought immediately and not let it linger in your mind. If a negative though stays in the mind for a long time then there is the possibility that it could turn into a habit. In which case, it would be very difficult to dispel or get rid of it.

Another powerful way to deal with negative thoughts and thus build self-esteem is through positive affirmations. These are words that suggest positive beliefs and ideas and are meant to be read or recited repeatedly. One of the most popular affirmation goes like this: In every day, in every way I am getting better and better. If you are having negative thoughts and are suffering from low self-esteem then try to say this affirmation to yourself several times throughout the day.

Finally, you can also improve your self-esteem by hanging out with positive and supportive friends and relatives. This is probably the most effective way of improving ones self-esteem. The words of encouragement and even praises of these individuals can do wonders to your self-esteem. Their love and understanding is definitely more powerful than any affirmation or positive thought. Sometimes just knowing that somebody believes in you makes you believe in yourself also.

Just follow the guidelines above and soon, your self-esteem will skyrocket.

Today’s success tip comes from Michelle Duval.

Michelle became a pioneer by founding Equilibrio, one of the very first coaching firms in Australia. Since then she has also co-developed the international Meta-Coach Training SystemÆ, training professional coaches in 35 countries.

Once awareness of issues is identified, how can people facilitate their own change?

Step One: Develop self-sustaining motivation for the change - identify specifically what you are moving away from and what it is that you no longer want. List what it is costing you emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually and so on. Identify all of the discomfort and painful feelings it currently gives you, or could if you do not do something about it.

Simultaneously identify what you are moving toward - what it is that you want and desire. List all the benefits of what you really want and why you want it. Identify all of the positive feelings associated with such benefits, recognising what the change will lead to and open up in your life. Once you can feel this in your body, as pushing and pulling energy, you are ready for Step Two.

Step Two: Make a definitive decision - identify what you need or want to change. Is it an internal change to a belief, an aspect of your identity or behaviour? Is it an external change to a relationship, your environment or so forth? Weigh the pros and cons of what specifically you need or want to change.

Is the timing right in your life for this level of change and are you prepared to do what it will take to make the change at this time? When you feel the energy of having decided, and feel an impatience to do it, you are ready for Step Three. Do not try any level of change without personal motivation and making a decision.

Step Three: Create an inner game plan for the change - internally develop the identity, beliefs, values, and mind-set that are aligned with the new behaviours and actions you want to create. Without a fully formed and solidified inner game, the habits and behaviours you want to develop will be ill formed and unsustainable.

Step Four: Birth the outer game - begin to express the first incremental developments of the new behaviours or actions in your life. Take baby steps and build upon the strength of those small steps until you have developed momentum and strength. Create a list of tasks and actions that you can use to hold yourself accountable for step-by-step development of your new abilities.

Step Five: Solidify and reinforce the change in yourself and your life - begin by counting and recognising the smallest baby steps or expression of the new ability and behaviour. Avoid testing or critiquing the new skills until they are fully formed. During the first phase of developing the skill or initially expressing it, you must only look for the closest expression of it and validate it - just as you would a child learning to walk or talk.

Only then can you begin to test and critique where the skill may need further refinement and improvement. If you initially test and critique the first expression of change or skill development, the new abilities and behaviours will not mature and you will abort the change process. You will end up looping round and round without making progress. Count the smallest improvement and you will exponentially accelerate growth and solidify change in your life.

I hope you’ve learned a lot from this week’s Success Tip, check back again next time for more great advice from the experts.

Until then,

Mac Fun
July 28th, 2009

Hey guys, just a little bit of fun. As you might have guessed from the rather biased ads, I’m an avid Mac user. Surprisingly you’ll probably be able to relate with a lot of the issues brought up in these ads, and who knows, you might even find out something you didn’t know about Macs.

Anyway, that’s all for this week. If you get a chance, check out your nearest Apple store, they really are worth a look at.

Until next time,

Today’s success tip comes from Robyn Henderson.

In 1992, she authored and self-published her first networking book and is now regarded as a “Global Networking Specialist”. She has written and contributed to more than 25 books on networking, self-esteem and self-promotion.

What is networking and how can everyday people use it to expand their opportunities?

Networking is a life skill, not just something you do when you want something. There are three universal laws that form the foundations of ethical networking.

1. Giving without expectations - the basic principle of helping others without an expectation of receiving something in return. It’s about being able to give someone a key piece of information or assistance that will enable them to achieve their goal, complete their task or assist them in some way. In the bestseller, Masters of Networking, Ivan Misner says, ‘Master networkers give without remembering and receive without forgetting’. This is the key to giving without expectation.

2. Understand the law of reciprocity - what you give out comes back tenfold, but not always from the same person. If you give out referrals you will receive referrals; if you give out love you will receive love; give out help and advice, receive help and advice. Good networkers are strong believers of this law of reciprocity, which also states ‘what goes around, comes around’. So this single belief ensures that you always treat people the way you would like to be treated.

3. Have an abundance mentality - in our time-poor, competitive society, abundant thinkers are often in short supply. These are the people who may still be challenged about the best way to build their careers or businesses, but ethical networkers have an underlying belief system that there is plenty for everyone. That is, plenty of opportunities for their product or service on a local, national and international scale, even though there does not appear to be sufficient market share for everyone. They know future markets may be only a personal contact away, a friend of a friend, a chance conversation, a serendipitous meeting with another. Abundant thinkers are open to ideas, networking opportunities and making the pie bigger for everyone.

People wishing to expand career or business opportunities can include networking skills into their daily and weekly plan by:

* Attending a networking event once a week.

* Allocating 15 minutes per day for networking activity. This could be a specific phone call to someone in your network, a fax, email, or sending a small gift or thank you card.

Until next time,

Creating an Online Business
July 14th, 2009

There are many different online businesses that you can create and in this blog today we are going to look at a couple of different types.

The first kind of businesses that you can create when looking to create an online business would be a website which serves a particular niche in the market. Many people have done this and this is often done by trying to find an under served niche, building a website, and then profiting off of this small but profitable match. Check out this great site to find more information on this particular topic. Here the author has created a website which finds under served niches which you could potentially build a website around. When you’re building a website, you’re going to want to find cheap keywords that you can use to help build your business as well as create good content. By creating the content and then creating back links between yourself and other websites, you’ll be setting yourself up to have a high page rank with Google. By using AdWords to bring traffic to your website and then also developing your natural search engine traffic through building up a website, you will have built yourself a very solid business. This is just one way of creating online business.

Another way to you can build and create an online business is through eBay. This is an area which was particularly hot several years ago and still remains a solid business proposition. Many people are able to make a full-time income on eBay. You will need to find a wholesaler where you can get products at a discount to sell on eBay. The general idea when working on selling on eBay is to find a drop shipper. A definition of a drop shipper is a wholesaler sells you a product and will ship the product to a customer. You will buy the product at the wholesale price and then make money on the difference between what you buy the product for and sell the product for on eBay. Using the wholesaler allows you to focus on selling the product without worrying about stocking the product. You do not need to worry about any sort of shipping or backend but you will want to make sure that everything gets sent out. If there are problems with shipments, the customer will be coming back to you and not to the wholesaler to. If you go to World Wide Brands, you will find one of the best wholesale shipping directories on the Internet.

These are two of the different ideas in creating an online business. There are many ways to make money on the Internet but these are two proven methods. You will not have to use a lot of money up front to create these particular online businesses and these businesses can be something that you will have great deal of success with.

That’s all for this week, check back again next week for more advice.

Until then,

Allan Poole
